Music is an integral part of worship at Fairmount, an expression of prayer and praise which touches us at a profoundly emotional level. Fairmount’s music program builds on a long tradition of musical quality in an outreach which offers opportunity for participation by members of all ages in music of diverse styles. Although it is focused on Sunday worship, note that Fairmount also puts on a Midwinter concert each year. One of the hallmarks of our vibrant church is the high level of congregational participation in the music program. Note that the vocal and handbell choirs are not as active during the summer.
Our Adult Choir sings for the majority of worship services and focuses primarily on traditional music from the renaissance to the present day, along with spirituals and some contemporary music. The choir is led by the church’s music director/organist, Steve Rosenberg. Practices are held Wednesday evenings from 7:50 – 9:00 pm. For information, contact Steve at 651/699-1335. New members are always welcome.
The Followers Choir, Fairmount’s youth choir, is a singing group with an over 30 year tradition at Fairmount Avenue. It is for youth in 7th through 12th grades, under the direction of Laura Mazhari. Rehearsals are on Wednesdays from 7:25 – 8:15 pm. The Followers sing contemporary and folkd music in Worship once a month and prepare a musical. The musical is taken “on the road” and performed at various locations during the youth summer trip and mission project each year. The Followers music program is a welcoming activity even if you don’t think of yourself as a good singer. We have fun with all styles of music, and in particular the musical has roles for non-actors and non-singers alike.
The Children’s Choir under the direction of Laura Mazhari , sings monthly and helps our youngest members learn about and express their faith through song. At Wednesday rehearsals, children have the opportunity to learn songs that will be featured during a future worship service. These songs will include singing and rhythmic accompaniment. The Children’s Choir also performs during the annual Midwinter Concert. Children?s Choir is open to all 1st – 6th graders, and rehearses from 6:30 – 7:00 pm. on Wednesdays.
Handbell music has been a staple of Fairmount’s music program since the church acquired its first octaves of handbells in the mid 1970s. The Heritage Ringers is the church’s adult bell choir and performs monthly in repertoire exploring the many varied techniques of bell ringing. Rehearsals are every week on Wednesday from 6:30 – 7:45 pm. Our focus is on creating music that enhances worship, however, we believe in having fun along the way! Although the ability to read music makes ringing much easier, it is not a prerequisite. New members are always welcome. We would also love to add new names to our list of substitute bell ringers. Mindy Way-Johnson directs the ensemble.
Our children’s bell choir, the Joyful Ringers, gives our 4th – 6th graders the chance to experience the joy of bell ringing while learning to read music and practice good bell technique. Rehearsals are most Wednesday evenings from 5:15 – 6:00 pm and and play music for worship about once a month. We live up to our name and include joy in every rehearsal! Mindy Way-Johnson directs ensemble.
In addition to the aforementioned choirs, we regularly encourage volunteers from the congregation to share their musical talents in our services. The beauty of flute, violin, trumpet, oboe, as well as guitar and mandolin are also regular additions to the variety of music making at our church.
